Bridge Exhibition at Newport Pagnell Library 7-26 September held in the library meeting room, entrance on Riverside.
Exhibition opening times: Monday – closed Tuesday 12.30-7.30pm Wednesday 12.30-5.30pm Thursday 12.30-5.30pm Friday 12.30 -7.30pm Saturday 10-4pm Sunday 2–4pm
Two hundred years ago Newport Pagnell’s two river bridges were worn out structures and had trouble coping with increased stage coach and other horse-drawn traffic. An Act of Parliament enabled Trustees to build a stone bridge across the Great Ouse in 1810. The same year a state-of-art iron bridge was assembled to span the Lovat at Tickford Street. Both bridges are still in daily use. Tickford Bridge is the oldest iron bridge in the Western world still carrying main road traffic.
At the exhibition, you can trace the story of the Iron Bridge from the planning stage right through to the opening and the taking of the first tolls. There are details of the journey of the bridge components from Yorkshire to London and then by canal to North Buckinghamshire. Well illustrated panels show life as it was in Regency England, a life that had no railway, no television or radio, no telephones and no cars.
Also, on display will be the winning and runners-up entries in the Middle Schools’ art competition held earlier this year. |
